If you have ever tried your hand at watercolor but want to push your paintings in new and exciting directions, or you're a complete beginner who wants to experience the magic of painting, this workshop is for you! This workshop will offer valuable exercises and instruction for both absolute beginners and experienced painters. No matter where you're starting from, this 6-week workshop will give you the skills and confidence to bring your artistic vision to life.
This class will meet weekly on Sunday's from 12 - 1:30 PM, beginning May 4. All classes will be recorded and sent out to participants to view in case you miss a class or want to revisit the lesson. Classes are hosted on zoom, and last for 1.5 hours each week.
Why Watercolor?
Watercolor is a medium full of movement, spontaneity, and beauty—but it also requires the right techniques to truly master. In this class, you’ll learn techniues to work with watercolor, mix luminous colors, and create stunning paintings. You will not be told what to paint in this course, but rather gradually build up your technical skills and confidence to create paintings that tell your own story, and are something you truly want to hang in your own home. In addition to learning how to paint with watercolor, this class will also offer stress relief through the act of creation, as well as provide community for support. Now is the perfect time to give yourself the gift of art.
What You’ll Learn (No Experience Needed!)
Over six weeks, you’ll build your skills from the ground up—learning fundamental techniques, experimenting with color, and finishing with a final painting you’ll be proud of. You will have the opportunity to practice landscapes, still lifes, and even pet and human portraits so that you know where your own unique skills and interests lie.
Here is a breakdown of the curriculum for this course:
Week 1: Mastering Watercolor Techniques & Values
- Learn wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques
- Understand light, shadow, and how to create depth through the use of values
Week 2: Color Theory Made Simple
- Explore complementary colors and how to mix vibrant vs. neutral tones
- Create a color wheel and learn how to mix paints without muddying colors
Week 3: The Power of a Limited Palette
- Work with just three primary colors to unlock luminous colors and cohesion
Week 4: Edges & Textures for Realistic Paintings
- Learn to create textures using soft, hard, and lost edges
- Explore how to paint metal, glass, fur, fabric, and skin realistically
Week 5: Your Unique Style & Final Project Planning
- Get personalized guidance on planning your own painting
Week 6: Final Painting, Critique & Celebration!
- Receive constructive feedback to grow as an artist
- Celebrate your progress and share your artwork
